Coyote Facts & Tips

• Coyotes are naturally shy and do not seek out human interaction. As their land continues to be taken away by over development, the need to coexist with each other grows.

• It is never a wild animal’s fault for attacking a domestic pet. Cats should always stay indoors and dogs should always be on leash or fully supervised when off leash in your yard. It is your duty as a responsible pet owner to keep your pets safe.

• As a responsible homeowner living in the suburbs, it is your duty to ensure garbage cans are securely closed to avoid unnecessarily attracting wildife and increasing the likelihood of unwanted interactions.

• If you see a coyote in the wild, it is best for you to begin making loud noises (clapping, yelling, whistle, air horn) or throw sticks or branches in the area of the coyote (never AT a coyote). This is known as “hazing” and is in the best interest of the coyote so that they maintain a healthy fear and distance from humans.

• Approximately one coyote is killed every minute of every day. Help stop the killing of coyotes by practicing peaceful coexistence.
